if only

My patient’s daughter said to me: “It seems like our love should be enough to save him. It feels so strong.” I got a bit teary-eyed at this. Yes, if only the strength of our love alone was powerful enough to keep the one we love safe. It feels like it should be enough, but it’s not.

If love alone were enough, Avalon and all of our lost babies would be here, with us. My love felt strong enough to topple kingdoms, to crush mountains, to implode the universe. In reality, it wasn’t even strong enough to save one tiny life.
