I know that baby loss moms everywhere are annoyed by the media circus surrounding the pregnancy of Kate Middleton. It seems like it’s everywhere, especially today as she is apparently in labor in the hospital. No one, anywhere, ever assumes that her baby might not make it. No one considers it as a possible outcome.
Girl? Boy? Alive?
The reality of baby loss parents sinks more and more into obscurity with every baby shower, every nursery, every gender and weight guess. Our reality becomes more and more of a freak exception, less and less a part of the world around us.
But should we really expect the rest of the world to throw in “if the baby makes it” onto the end of every sentence, the way we do? That would be unreasonable, yes? But somehow just so re-affirming to our existence.
We were just as excited about our babies as the world is about the next heir to the kingdom. In our minds, news reporters counted down to our due dates, and talk show hosts speculated for hours on end about our future child. When our babies died, the whole world plunged into mourning, at least to us. A future king or queen died, and with it the hopes of an empire on the vast continents of our hearts.
