buying baby food from the homeless in SF

We have had a really good time in San Francisco, where the vibe is so chill and the people are so friendly and relaxed. The city is clean, stylish, and easy to get around in, even for a car-less person with a baby, diaper bag, and stroller. I love the health and diversity-conscious atmosphere that abounds here. It’s a big city minus the hustlers, the dirty air, or the urban blight.

Tonight we bid farewell to Saba, and that was really sad for me. Although I drove through Northern California on my own with the baby, and loved it, boy was it easier with one other person to help. Just being able to go to the bathroom, run into a store, or hand me things when my hands were already full made life so much easier.

I needed to run to a pharmacy to replenish necessary baby supplies, with baby food being one item I wanted. Eating plain old pureed food out of a jar is something Jo Jo really likes to do, and it keeps her full. I was totally out by yesterday, but the Walgreen’s I hit up this evening didn’t have any. Oh well, I thought, I’ll just walk to another grocery store tomorrow morning.

But I didn’t have to! A homeless man pushing his cart saw me pushing my stroller, and said “hey, I have some baby food to sell if you’re interested…” It was totally his lucky day, because he just stumbled across the one tourist who is TOTALLY interested in buying jars of generic baby food right at that minute. He had gotten a WIC package from a shelter and of course didn’t need the baby items. I gave him $10 for like 15 cans of baby food, and we both walked away totally happy.

  1. Win! I’m sure plenty of people would not buy baby products from a homeless man, even sealed. So kudos to you (I would too).

    1. He was so friendly and non-threatening, and the food was sealed (which he made sure to point out to me). He also told me right away that he picked them up today so the expiration dates were all good. I was so happy, and so was he!
