I’ve been dismissive of travel nursing before, as I wanted to live “abroad” (and nursing is too different in non-Western countries), plus I work in a specialty (MICU) which means my skills depend heavily on certain equipment, resources, and technologies. So I was always like, forget it, except for Abu Dabi there’s nowhere I could realistically go.
I don’t know why it’s taken this long, but it just hit me that traveling from the midwest to anywhere in the world is super expensive, and it would be a lot easier to travel to foreign countries from places like, say, NYC or California or Alaska or Florida. Not to mention, I’d love to see Alaska, live in NYC, and enjoy 6 months of beach living in Florida. I’m not going to make more money than I do now, but I’ll easily qualify for the tax-free provided accomodations or stipend because I maintain a tax-base at home (my cottage for which I pay a mortgage). My mother lives there, so she pays the mortgage, and I just got a re-finance that rolls my house insurance and yearly property taxes into a much lower monthly bill.
Since I’m not keen on putting M into any school system, it wouldn’t be a problem to move about every 3-9 months, with several months of a year for extended travel or living in Nepal. With accommodation and travel expenses paid for, it wouldn’t be too hard to save, and my net salary would remain about the same. The one catch is childcare… I only pay $260 a month for preschool right now (5 days a week, 8:30-11am) but I would need a full-time nanny of some sort wherever we went, unless my mom is visiting or staying for a time.
I’m excited about this. I plan to stay put the next couple of years, pay down debt, and see my grandma through to the end of her life, as well as allow for my kiddo to be a bit older and on board, and stay with her Montessori school throughout the 3-4 year session.
