potty training!

I wasn’t even going to discuss or worry about potty training until M was 2 1/2. That’s not to say I wouldn’t be working on it, but I wasn’t going to push it or make it an issue until then. M likes to sit on the potty and frequently asks for “bah-ee” (potty). She sits on the normal toilet, sometimes for a long time sometimes for a short time, then wipes herself, gets down, and flushes. She’s been doing this for well over six months, and really loves her “potty book”, too. But she has yet to actually do anything into the toilet. She can tell me when her diaper needs changed, though, and calls anything that looks dirty (melted muddy ice from shoes, spots on carpet, etc) “poo poo”.

The other night, diaper-less and running away from me and my attempts to re-diaper her, she suddenly started saying “poo poo! poo poo!” and pointing to a couple of wet spots on the bed. She had peed a little there so I hurried her into the bathroom, saying “oh do you want to go potty??” to which she enthusiastically replied, “bah-ee! bah-ee!” So I sat her on the potty, expecting nothing. She wiggled her toes, closed her eyes, and with an expression of extreme concentration on her face, she peed just a little!

Dudes, I was so freaking excited, and proud. I mean, I don’t remember feeling that proud when she said her first word. Maybe similar to how I felt when she took her first step? I seriously hate to think how my chest will burst when she does something that actually requires skill, concentration, hard work, or talent…. like graduating high school, creating real art work, or getting an A on her first exam.

I’m under no illusion that she is going to be peeing consistently in the toilet right away, but we’re really getting going now that I know she is capable of holding her urine until she gets to the potty and then letting it out. I am going to ask her school to start facilitating the process by giving her trips to the bathroom along with diaper changes.

As it gleefully proclaims at the end of “The Potty Book”, and as M likes to shout triumphantly: “Undies!”

  1. Hooray! She is such a smart girl! You might be surprised, once she realizes how much more comfy it is to not have yucky diapers touching her she may just potty train herself!
